From our 2017 Anthology Resolution
With a tumultuous few weeks in the midst of National Women's Month, I was conflicted over what to bring to the blog. With Sarah Everard and all women who have felt the cold grasp of oppression in mind, I wanted to highlight a piece which doesn't indulge in the murky details, does not define itself by the cruelty it experiences from others. This piece, though written years prior, tells a timeless tale of resilience and strength through it's subtlety. The words ring especially true now that we are reminded to check in on our friends, text them to make sure they got home safe.
Replying “I’m okay…”
Tave Burnett
Replying “I’m okay…”
I’m fine, flustered, falling,
Broken hearted, full of pain,
Like dirt, like rain, I feel
used, disdained, broken hearted
full of pain in this cycle of life,
it’s like I’ve been left
in the dirt, in the rain-
But “it’s alright”, I reply,
“It’s alright- I’m okay.”
