Juba

Juba is the Capital of the Republic of South Sudan. This is a landlocked country in Central Africa that is bordered by Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic and Sudan. South Sudan's predominantly African Christian and animist population gained independence from Sudan and its Sharia Islamic law in a vote in July 2011, after years of war and religious devision. The official languages are Arabic and English, though Juba Arabic and Dinka are also widely used throughout the Republic.

ICWS was founded first as a partnership between the Universities of Juba, South Sudan and York, UK. This creative writing society as it stands today is indebted to the years of hard work and creativity from the contributing students from both of these universities. Today, ICWS is open to submissions from students all over the world.
