From Resolution (2017)
Our Anthology Archives celebrate the previous work of the talented writers who have submitted their work to ICWS, while also pointing ahead to the exciting edition coming out this year. Through this series on ICWS Online we can come to explore how expressions of the human condition can both deviate and come back to mirror each other over the years. Our first piece Life's Hidden Gifts looks into what it means to be a person in-between places and of a strikingly 'insatiable mind'. With the global condition, a beautiful and thoughtful encounter with nature is much needed.
Life’s Hidden Gifts
Heidi Needham
Sometimes we find ourselves so distracted Longing for the distant stars That we forget to embrace The warmth of our own sun. Like a gardener gazing with envious eyes At his neighbours perfect rose, While his own gorgeous peony Stands overlooked beneath his nose. The insatiable mind Can brew such a storm That even Life’s gifts Lie bruised and darkened. But a flower battered And drooping in the rain Can be sprightly and sweet When the clouds part again. For there’s no must-do, must-see, No must-have, no must-be. Life has no rule book, No stone-set look; What brings happiness to one May not bring happiness to me. Life offers gifts unique to us all- Hidden, though they sometimes may seem. Like moonlight struggling through the night sky Or the dawning sun glimmering on the horizon. And some of Life’s gems May take a little more digging, Before their beauty starts to shine.
